Our history

Swedish Match: Delivering a Smoke-Free Future

Swedish Match—an affiliate of Philip Morris International (PMI)—has been a leader in the tobacco industry for more than 200 years and is working to deliver a smoke-free Nordics by 2035.

Our Nordic region employs 1,600 people in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway, including in production facilities, retail stores, and the Swedish Match innovation center and museum in Stockholm.

PMI is a leading international tobacco company that is actively delivering a smoke-free future and evolving its portfolio for the long term to include products outside the tobacco and nicotine sector. Since 2008, the company has invested USD 12.5 billion to develop, scientifically substantiate, and commercialize innovative smoke-free products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, with the goal of completely ending the sale of cigarettes. This includes the building of world-class scientific assessment capabilities, notably in the areas of preclinical systems toxicology, clinical and behavioral research, and post-market studies. In 2022, PMI acquired Swedish Match, creating a global smoke-free champion. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized versions of PMI’s heated tobacco products and Swedish Match’s snus products as modified risk tobacco products.

As of December 31, 2023, PMI’s smoke-free products were available for sale in 84 markets. Smoke-free products accounted for approximately 37 percent of PMI’s total full-year 2023 net revenues, and the Nordics was an important contributor to that.

Sustainability

The health impact of cigarette smoking is the most significant and pressing negative externality our strategy aims to address. Lessening this impact is the most valuable societal contribution we can make and is the cornerstone of PMI’s purpose and business strategy. Addressing this critical issue requires a three-pronged approach:

  1. Maximize the benefits of smoke-free products
  2. Purposefully phase out cigarettes
  3. Seek net positive impact in wellness and healthcare.

In the Nordics we focus on the areas where we can have the biggest impact locally, such on health, waste, workplace and illicit trade. Through the thorough work in our global operation, we also ensure full focus on improving the quality of life of people in our supply chain and actions to tackle climate change and nature on a global level. As we believe business can and must contribute to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGSs), we have linked each of our strategies to the corresponding SDG.

The debate on plastics in Nature is something we take seriously. As two examples, we can mention that in Sweden we have a large campaign to gather used snus cans, and in Norway we work with different organizations to raise awareness of waste and also to do cleaning events both alone and with business partners.
